ROSEMARY ARCA (English)
Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, CAThe GSCC experience has reminded me of the importance of reflection both for students and for the classroom practitioner. The reflection we do as part of our GSCC Tools and Routines informs and shapes everything I now do in the classroom.

Jams
What is a Jam?
A jam is an online exchange, and like jamming in music, it is about riffing on themes. A group of people ‘speak’ together using written posts about a subject of importance to them, and the discussion is actively facilitated to deepen the exchange.
One of the advantages of the Jam is that it is asynchronous, so that you can come and go as your schedule permits–reading and contributing at convenient times.
Past Jams
From February 16th-February 19th, hundreds of developmental education faculty from 44 states and the District of Columbia participated in Pedagogy Matters!, the first national Jam on developmental education pedagogy.
Jam participants were overwhelmingly faculty, including a substantial number of adjunct faculty. Over 800 people completed a pre-Jam survey and over 400 participated in the Jam itself.
The Jam was an opportunity for faculty across the country to learn about some of the ideas that the Global Skills faculty have been working on and to contribute their perspective on these. Three main subject areas were set up as discussion threads for Jam participants.
See the Pedagogy Matters! Manifesto, faculty’s declaration to pursue an ongoing national conversation about Developmental Education Pedagogy.
An analysis of the Jam will be posted on the GSCC website. GSCC is also initiating an online community for adjuncts.
