KPI is dedicated to shaping and guiding the incorporation of technology so that working teams increase their impact.  In partnership with MCNC (mcnc.us), KPI has created an online professional development model (ePD) and numerous online communities of practice. KPI has also developed, with ECS (ecs.org), a “guided digital toolkit” for state policy-makers as part of its Getting Past Go project, which is funded by Lumina Foundation for Education.

LaGuardia Community College

pedagogy
LaGuardia Community College, in metropolitan New York City, serves 60,000 credit and noncredit students, over two-thirds of whom were not born in the U.S. They come from over 160 different countries and speak 110 languages, in addition to English.

LaGuardia graduates almost twice the national average of students in eight years, even though the large immigrant and New York City public school students come to college with severe academic deficits. LaGuardia has a thirty-year history of developing and implementing innovative programs for basic skills students.

Beginning with learning communities and including current leadership in ePortfolio, faculty at LaGuardia have harnessed innovation to make a difference in the lives of low-income students. Data confirm that these newly created pedagogical strategies advance deep, reflective learning. A 2004 Hesburgh award acknowledged the excellence of its professional development program, as does a recent FIPSE-funded project through which LaGuardia faculty are teaching ePortfolios to educators at 24 other colleges.

London Knowledge Lab/ Dr. Diana Laurillard

knowledge model
The London Knowledge Lab is a unique collaboration between two of the UK’s most prominent centres of research – the Institute of Education and Birkbeck. The Lab brings together computer and social scientists from a very broad range of fields in order to:

  • Understand the place of digital technologies and media in our cultural, social and educational relationships with knowledge – finding, acquiring, creating, and sharing it;
  • Design, build and evaluate systems, processes and interfaces that enhance these relationships; and
  • Examine critically the assumptions about knowledge and learning that underlie the increasingly wide range of applications of digital technologies.
